What is NPR 2020 and How it Will be Done – National Population Register Full Details

Amidst all the unrest over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the country, Indian Government on Tuesday 23 Dec 2019 has announced that it has given approval to a budget of Rs 8,500 crore for updating the National Population Register in 2020. This NPR updatng exercise will start from April 2020 to make a list of usual residents of the country.

What is NPR – National Population Register 2020

The National Population Register (NPR) is a register of usual residents of the country being prepared at the local (village/sub-town), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registrations of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

Is NPR – National Population Register Compulsory for all Indian Citizens ?

NPR is Mandatory for every single usual resident of India so they have to register to the NPR.

Who is a Usual Resident under NPR – National Population Register

Under the NPR a usual resident is defined as a person who has resided in a local area for the past 6 months or more or a local resident who is intended to reside in that area for next 6 months of more.
